Contouring can seem intimidating to beginners, but with a little practice, it’s a simple and effective way to enhance your face’s natural features. It helps in creating a more defined and sculpted look. Here are the top five face contouring tips for beginners.

All About That Base

Start by moisturizing and cleaning your face. Cleanse and moisturize your skin before applying any makeup to give it a smooth canvas for contouring. This will make it easier for the contouring products to blend into your skin and make them appear more natural.

Know your shade

Pick the appropriate contouring products based on the tone and type of your skin. Powders can sometimes be more pigmented and easier to overdo, whereas cream or liquid formulas tend to blend more readily. For the most natural-looking contour, it’s critical to select a shade that is just a touch darker than your natural skin tone. If you have fair skin, opt for a contouring product with a cool undertone, such as a taupe or ash-toned shade. If you have medium or olive skin, a warm-toned contour, such as a light to medium brown, will work well. For deeper skin tones, a dark brown or black contour may be the best option.

The right technique

Make sure to use a small, dense brush for precise application. This type of brush will allow you to apply the contouring product precisely. You can apply it where you want it and blend it out seamlessly. To contour your face, you’ll want to apply the product along the hollows of your cheeks, down the sides of your nose, and along your jawline. You can also contour your forehead and temples for a more defined look.

Blend, blend, blend!

The key to successful contouring is blending the contouring product into your skin in such a way that it looks natural and not overly harsh. Use a blending brush or a beauty sponge to blend the contour into your skin. Start at the outer edges of the contoured area and work your way inward, using circular or back-and-forth motions to blend the product into your skin. Make sure to blend the product down onto your neck and ears as well, to avoid creating a noticeable line of demarcation.

Keep It Going

Keep in mind to start with a light hand and build up the intensity as needed. It’s always easier to add more product than it is to take it away, so start with a light hand and build up the intensity as needed. This will help you avoid creating overly harsh lines or an unnatural look. If you’re using a powder contour, tap off excess product from your brush before applying it to your skin to avoid applying too much at once. If you’re using a cream or liquid contour, you can always use a setting powder to help blend and set the product.

Contouring can take some practice to get right, but with these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to creating a defined and sculpted look that enhances your natural features. Just remember to start with a clean, moisturized face, choose the right contouring products for your skin type and tone, use a small, dense brush for precise application, blend, blend, blend, and start with a light hand and build up the intensity as needed. With a little practice, you’ll be a contouring pro in no time!
